The award ceremony, held on Thursday, the 25th of July at the Federal University of Alagoas (Ufal), marked groundbreaking achievements for the region.
For the first time, a student representing indigenous communities, Aurinã da Silva Queiroz from Escola Estadual Pajé Miguel Selestino, secured a bronze medal at the regional level. Aurinã’s accomplishment is a significant milestone, not only for him personally but also for the Xukuru-Kariri people. His school principal, Gecinaldo Soares Queiroz, emphasized the symbolic victory, celebrating the recognition of indigenous education and cultural values. "We are thrilled to see our students shine, representing many others from indigenous backgrounds in Alagoas," he stated.
Another groundbreaking achievement came from Lara Ilkeliane Leite of Escola Estadual Noel Nutels in Maceió. She became the second young woman from Alagoas to win a gold medal in the 18-year history of the OBMEP. Lara expressed her joy, stating, "This victory shows that girls can achieve whatever they set their minds to. It doesn’t matter your financial situation or where you come from; with effort, you can achieve great things."
The victories continued with Isac Vinicius Xavier from Escola Estadual Alberto Torres, who also earned a gold medal. Isac, a seasoned competitor in academic olympiads with 13 golds to his name, remarked on the honor and opportunities brought by his OBMEP success.
The Colégio Tiradentes da Polícia Militar – Unidade Agreste also celebrated a record number of ten medals, with five students receiving both regional and national recognition. Among them, Letícia Bispo stood out, clinching silver in both categories. She shared her enthusiasm, stating that the medal marked a significant milestone in her academic career.
In total, 76 students from Alagoas’ state schools were honored at the ceremony, earning 7 gold, 17 silver, and 52 bronze medals. This remarkable achievement represents the best performance by the state’s school system in the history of OBMEP. Notably, four of the gold medals were won at the national level, breaking previous records of two golds each in 2019 and 2021.
Adelailson Peixoto, the OBMEP coordinator in Alagoas from Ufal’s Institute of Mathematics, highlighted the competition’s impact. "OBMEP positively influences students’ families and academic performances, enhancing educational outcomes for participating schools," he explained.
Ricardo Lisboa, the Superintendent of Educational Policies at the Department of Education (Seduc), lauded the results. He emphasized the growing success of Alagoas in knowledge olympiads and the increased participation of girls in STEM fields, particularly in partnership with UNESCO to promote math, science, technology, and innovation among female students.
